Château Saint Mery
The souls of eight generations of winemakers are flowing through Richard Labene’s veins.
These winemakers were attached to their Minervois as the qualities of the land satisfied their ambitions of making a wine of character.
Freedom of creativity is widely appreciated on a global scale when the artist is well educated!
And as a young 30 year old wine maker, Richard continues the challenging adventure marked by this long history.
In addition to his father’s Minervois origin, his mother’s father, from the Roussillon (region of Perpignan) came into the Minervois with art of orchard growing, the inheritance of sweet wine making and the spirit of the Catalonian.
From the old Grenache planted in the 1960s to the Merlot planted in the 1970s the Labene family was amongst the first to bottle their own wines. The techniques of vinification at low temperatures have been used for more than twenty years (a technical decision well advance for the time which enhances the fruity dimension of the wine), this combined with a deep knowledge of the land and wine plants enable a full bodied and solid wine.
Landscapes
The wines reflect two types of landscapes separated by several kilometres...
1.The stony hills of Tourouzelle, and
2.the sweeping planes, consisting of soils of rounded medium sized pebbles (galets roulés), bordering the Canal du Midi in Marseillette.
As a result the family inheritance has allowed to elaborate wines showing the qualities of two diverse landscapes within the same Minervois appellation.
The warm light across dry stone walls, the poor soils - great for growing vine, the patches of green grass like small islands within the dominating surrounding dry bush lands, all giving the impression of freedom and space, and it is this that influences and is found in the wines of Château Saint Mery.
